In a press statement, UNHCR said tragedies do take place in the high sea as just a few days ago another boat carrying illegal immigrants sank and 29 immigrants were drowned. That very boat which was ferrying the illegal immigrants sank after torrential winds hit the Mediterranean sea especially near the sea waters off the coast of Italy.
UNHCR expressed concern over the Operation Triton which is aimed at fighting the increased trend in which the immigrants try to come to Europe. UNHCR said this very operation replaced other operations which were rather for the rescuing of illegal immigrants. Operation Triton replaced them in the year 2014.
At least 3,500 immigrants lost their lives last year while trying to cross the Mediterranean sea which is between the countries of Libya and Italy.
