His Excellence Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, president of the federal republic of Somalia has condoled the death of Ex vice president & defense minister Gen Mohamed Ali Samatar who died in USA last night.
In condolatory message on the official Twitter account of the presidential palace on Saturday, Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Gen Samatar played a significant role in the army.
“Samatar has done a tangible job for the country and played a founding role in building of Somali National Army (SNA). He was a patriot,” Mohamud said in a Twitter post.
Mohamed Ali Samatar who served as Somali defense and vice president during the military regime led by late Mohamed Siad Barre from 1969 to 1991. He died in Virginia a State in the USA at the age of 85.
Gen Samatar was one of the most powerful member of the Supreme Revolutionary Council which took the power in a military coup in 1969. His regime was ousted by clan warlords in 1991.
