Sahra Mohamed Ali Samatar, Minister of Women and Human Rights of the federal republic of Somalia has denied reports that some articles of the new gender law are against Islam.

“I have no idea the false news circulating in the public that the recently approved gender policy is contrary to the Islamic region,” said.

“In the new gender law, we said women and men are equal in the educational rights, but we did not say people of same sex can get marry, this is a propaganda and baseless report,” She added.

The minister’s comments came days after the council of Somali clerics have issued a statement condemning the new national gender policy, in which they said it is against Islam.

In their weekly meeting held on Thursday in Mogadishu, Somali cabinet has set up a committee to probe into the allegations on the gender law.
