An elder has accused the outgoing Somali prime minister Omar Abdirashid and the internal security minister Abdirisak Omar Mohamed of fuelling the escalating tensions in the central Galkacyo town.

Mohamud Ali Nur Barre, the elder called for both officials should be held accountable for their role in the ongoing deadly battle between Galmudug and Puntland  in Galkayo, the regional capital of Mudug.

Barre urged leaders of the warring sides to immediately end Galkayo unrest through dialogue brokered by local elders and clerics instead of foreign mediation in the violence.

However, Somali president denied claims that his government is fueling the unrest in Mudug region over contested areas between Galmudug and Puntland.

Somali president called on the two sides to immediately implement the signed agreement with full commitment to end violence in Galkayo so that peace and stability could prevail in the area.

At least 50,000 people have been displaced due to conflict between the two parties in Galkaya, according to the UN. Last month, 11 people were killed and dozens injured in similar clashes there.
