Hundreds flee as Somali commandos raid Barire, Lower Shabelle Region

Hundreds of Somali families fled their house in the southern small town of Barire as Somali elite commandos, along with their AU and US troops ally carried out dawn raid at Al shabaab bases.

Helicopters believed to be belonging the Unites States military have dropped Somali commando soldiers near the town, and attacked the Al shabaab bases in Barire, some 60Km south west of Mogadishu.

Somali National Army and the African Union mission in Somalia known as (AMISOM) forces have also launched a ground offensive on Barire and engaged firefight with Al shabaab militants, according to residents.

The troops who attacked the town have moved from their nearby bases in Lambar-Konton (KM-50) area in Lower Shabelle region.

The exact casualties of both sides are still unknown, but the joint attack on Barire becomes the latest in string of ground and air  raids on Al shabaab bases in south and central Somalia.
