Former BBC Somali service reporter Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu has been elected as the new secretary general of NUSOJ – National Union of Somali Journalists on Tuesday.

A section of Somali journalists who met in a hotel in Mogadishu have voted in favor of Moalimu and elected him as the head of the National Union of Somali Journalists.

During the election, the Journalists elected Mahir Jama as the Union’s chairman and Muhaydin Husni, a local reporter as his deputy, according to the ballots.

This election comes as Somalia is ranked one of the most dangerous countries in the world to work in as a journalist due to the long-running conflict.

Fifty nine journalists have been killed since 1992, many of them either murdered or killed in crossfire, combat or while on dangerous assignments.
