A suicide car bomber blew his explosives-laden vehicle into the gates of Somali police headquarters in Mogadishu, killing five people, police, and witnesses said Monday.

According to witnesses, two armed militants tried to storm the centre in Abdiaziz district after the blast before they were shot dead.

Two police officers are among the three people killed in the blast which also killed one civilian.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack; however, the Al-Qaeda linked Al Shabab group often carries out such attacks.

Despite being ousted from most of their key strongholds, the militant group continues deadly guerrilla attacks across large parts of south and central Somalia
