Reports reaching us from Lower Shabelle region indicate Somali commando unit forces and unspecified foreign forces have attacked Al shabaab base in Barire town.
A resident who asked to be named, told IdaleNews.com by phone that the Somali and foreign troops using helicopters swept into the area run by Al shabaab.
Heavy gunfire broke out between Al shabaab and the allied forces in the town, with reports that the militants were overpowered in the battle and fled the area.
In the past few days, Somali commandos and foreign forces stepped up ground and air offensives against Al shabaab strongholds in Lower Shabelle region, including Taratorow and Sabiid villages.
