Al shabaab militants in central Somalia have on Tuesday paraded an elder whom they said has surrendered to them after escaping from Adado city, the HQ of the interim Galmudug administration.

The elder – Mohamud Ali Barre has been displayed in the Al shabaab-held Harardere town, a former pirate hub and coastal city in Mudug region in central Somalia.

The elder said he has surrendered to Al shabaab over “immorality and anti-Islam acts” he said were committed by the Galmudug state troops in Adado city.

Al shabaab fighters who are fighting to topple the western-backed Somali government control large swathes of ground despite being ejected Mogadishu in 2011.
