Al-Shabaab executes alleged Tanzanian spy

Al Shabaab said it has executed a Tanzanian national convicted of spying for US and Rawandan intelligence agencies on the militants’ activities in Southern Somalia.

The Tanzanian whose named has been identified as Issa James Mwaisige was executed in the Al Shabaab-held Jilib town in middle Jubba region on Sunday by a firing squad.

Al-Shabaab alleged the Tanzanian who was one of its foreign jihadists has turned spy joined Rwandan and US intelligence agencies as a secret agent operating the militants-controlled areas in Somalia.

Speaking in the new Al Shabaab video, the executed Tanzanian spy said he was given $4,000 by US and Rwandan Intelligence agencies to gather information about the location of the group’s top leaders.

The alleged Tanzanian spy said that the Rwandan Intelligence agents were interested to learn about the military capabilities of Burundi and Uganda forces serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The United States has also authorized covert operations in the Horn of Africa nation in the past, to target senior Al shabaab commanders whom it sees as a threat to its interest in the region.
