Al- Shabaab fighters have launched a coordinated assault on a military base belonging to African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) located in the outskirts of Mogadishu on Tuesday night.
Reports say Al Shabaab militants attacked the military base, which is run by Burundian troops who are part of the AMISOM near Elasha Biyaha, 18Km southwest of Mogadishu with mortars.
Local residents told Radio Shabelle by phone that the Burundian peacekeepers’ base was hit by several mortar shells fired from undisclosed location held by Al Shabaab on Tuesday night.
Details of the casualties remained unclear, as AMISOM did not made a comment on the attack. However, Al Shabaab claimed big victory over the latest attack on AU forces.
Al Shabaab fighters have carried out such ambush attacks on AMISOM and SNA bases in Lower Shabelle region in the past. The skirmishes have been rampant since militants were driven out of Mogadishu in 2011.
