Two soldiers serving with the interim Jubbaland administration army were killed, and several others wounded in grenade explosions rocked Kismayo city.

Assailants believed to be Al shabaab members hurled grenades at Jubbaland army bases in Dal’adda iyo Alanley villages in Kismayo town on Tuesday night.

Local residents said they heard four blasts around military bases belonging to Jubbaland forces in Kismayo city, the regional capital of Lower Jubba province.

Al shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack on Jubbaland bases in Kismayo as the town is preparing to host upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

The city has served once as the main financial and operational hub for the militants before they were being forced out in 2012 by Somali and Kenyan troops.
